What does "walk by faith, not by sight" actually mean?

"For we walk by faith, not by sight." — 2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV)

It's one of the most quoted verses in the New Testament, printed on mugs and hung over doorways. But taken out of its chapter, it can start to feel like a slogan. So what did Paul actually mean when he wrote it — and what does it look like to live it in an ordinary week?

1. The context Paul wrote it in

2 Corinthians 5 is a chapter about mortality. Paul opens by comparing the human body to a tent — temporary, easily worn out — and contrasts it with an eternal "building from God." He isn't being poetic for its own sake. He's writing to a church that has watched him suffer, and he's telling them: the visible situation is not the whole situation. There is more going on than what your eyes can report.

Verse 7 is the hinge. "We walk by faith, not by sight" is Paul's answer to the question the Corinthians were quietly asking: how do you keep going when everything visible says stop?

2. "Walk" is a working word

The Greek verb Paul uses (peripateō) doesn't mean a stroll. In the New Testament it's the standard word for how a person lives day to day — their conduct, their pattern, their ordinary life. When Paul says "walk," he isn't describing a mountaintop moment. He's describing Tuesday.

That matters. Faith isn't only for the crisis or the altar call. Faith is what gets you dressed, gets you to work, and gets you back home when nothing about the day felt particularly holy.

3. "Not by sight" isn't anti-eyes

Paul is not telling anyone to ignore reality. He is telling them that reality has more than one layer. Sight reports the surface — the diagnosis, the bank balance, the unanswered prayer. Faith reports what is true underneath — that God is present, that the story isn't over, that the outcome is not the last word.

Both are real. Only one of them is a reliable compass for the direction of your life.

4. What it looks like on a Tuesday

Walking by faith looks like:

• Choosing to be generous when your budget looks tight.
• Showing up to serve when your feelings don't match the assignment.
• Praying the same prayer for the eighteenth month.
• Telling the truth when a small lie would smooth things over.
• Believing you're loved by God on the day you can't feel it.

None of this is dramatic. That's the point. Faith is mostly quiet.
